Hi,

I've got just one question. I'm creating a new character and
I want to give him Smartlink (big surprise :-). I think I
have read some thing about a Smartlink II system. But I
can't remember which book it was. Therefor I'd like to know
where I can find Smartlink II or did I just confuse it with
something else ?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the Smartlink II is in Fields of Fire.

BTW, your Reply-to field is overiding the list. This means that
replies to your posts will go directly to you, instead of back to the
list (unless the replier changes the address). If you want replies to
your posts to go to the list disable/clear the Reply-to field/option on
your mailer.

The smartlink II is in Fields of Fire on page 57, with game rules for it
on pages 84-85.

I was going to add something about your reply-to field, but I see David
already mentioned it.

For those of us without FOF, what's the difference between smartlink and
smartlink II? I'm not asking for game mechanics (which could violate
copyright stuff), but generally what makes it better than the original.

Smartlink II systems give the same bonuses as basic systems, but also
reduce the penalties for called shots, give extra bonuses for long-range
shots when used with a rangefinder, and give bonuses to indirect-fire
weapons like grenade launchers.

SL2 systems are, obviously, a virtual must-have for would-be snipers and
marksmen.

On a different note along the same topic, how do you
folks handle letting your PCs (either starting or
veteran) get ahold of the Smartlink II? It certainly
doesn't seem to be extraordinarily hard to get, based
on availability and such.
My problem with it is that the called shot modifier
improvement makes it extremely appealing to anyone
who fires a gun. While that's fine in itself, I'm not
prepared to let it phase out the older model (why fix
it if it ain't broke?). FASA seems to feel the same,
otherwise I assume they'd have replaced it in SR3
just like they did with the headware memory (though
who really knows except FASA :)
Do you limit its purchasing to those who have the
proper contacts (and who would those contacts be?
Military? Street-Doc? Corporate dude?) Is it only
available in certain clinics? Is it a free-for-all
where everyone has it and it basically is a replacement
for the original Smartlink (You can tell how much I like _that_
option...every shot a called shot...)?
Do you make beginning characters take the original
model and upgrade later?
Of course, this little spiel could apply to any piece
of technology I guess (think Muscle Aug vs. Muscle Rep,
Bone Lacing vs. Dermal Plates).

Many thanks to all those who replied (or started to do so)
to my question!

Ah, thats why I didn't find it. It's one of the few book I
don't own!

I must apologize - I should have known.
I had a liitle computer problems last weeks and I had to
reinstall my mail programs and it seems that I missed to
configure this one but it should be corrected now. If it
still behaves uncomfortable please let me know.

It's better at making called shots and, when linked to a rangefinder, at
long-range attacks. It also is better capable of calculating arcs for
indirect fire, and just "feels better" to the user.
