An interesting observation...
Those figures are based off of expected projections, drawing into account
current and historical trends, as well as prognostications regarding present
and theorized life expectancy. For estimating the world's population during
the time of ShadowRun, one is compelled to make allowanced for the world-wide
plague of VITAS, including what sounds similar to a role-call of disasters,
both natural and human-generated.
There have been numerous large-scale conflicts, the EuroWar being only one such
example. In the literature it is often stressed how precarious safety can be
in contemporary times, such that you may notice that life expectancy for
humans, according to ShadowRun II, is a mere 55 years!
Life, dependant upon your local, has become perilously close to Thomas Hobbes'
view in LEVIATHAN: "nasty, brutish, and short."
