Note: I am not a WotC apologist, and I don't like what they're doing to
the industry, but here's what I heard for what it's worth:

Apparently the center where GenCon is held has been renovated and
considerably spiffied up, and they are now charging commensurately
higher prices. This is, apparently, what WotC are passing on to the game
companies.

This may be a load of codswallop, but it ought to be reasonably easy to
check up on.

And it's due to open 2 weeks before Gencon, which means if construction
falls behind, they'll have to move it back to the old facility.. ;)

Sounds like a response to the fact that the RPG 'community', for lack of a
better word, is getting older - and thus wealthier. Many on this group,
at least, is between 24+, computer savvy (mostly male). They/we are
high-salary workers, with a lot of cash.

The other half is students with about half a buck to their name...

Will the future show RPG designers aiming games at one or the other groups,
and will that be for the better? Yes and no, I suspect.
