Gee, I would've replied to send my condolences to Rob and offer him my
sincerest wishes for the continued good function of his eyes. But with
1299 messages, I figured that I might as well make it public, rather than
aggravate an already exacebated situation privately. :)

Actually, I think the record (at least while I've been around) was 306, and
that was in early november, right after we switched over from Majordomo to
Listserv... And Mark accidentily had the server set to recieve only 50
mails per day... Can you say List Crash?? i knew you could... It was
down for three days...

And ya know, I don't even know what we were talking about at the time...

AFAIK, the highest number of messages was something like 480 in a day,
when that one guy's account bounced them back to the list... Naturally,
there was nothing useful in them, and they got longer all the time :(

What kind of mailbox size have you got?
And what's your disk quota?

If you have access to filters (using elm, you do) you can set them to save
things from your mailbox to your disk quota......

This tidies things up quite a lot....

(If only I'd known that last summer..... AAAAAARGH!)

Ahhh yes... The deaded cascade....

The first time I tried making use of filters in ELM, and got toakky the
wrong idea.......
I think that lasted a couple of DAYS, and it happened more than once....

I don't think we had one of them since we got rid of Listproc, have we?

One Sunday, when Mark was safely at home probably watching football and
eating cheesies, the list exploded..we had over 5000 messages that day.
Yes, three zero's. It was bouncing of some guys mail account and was
getting worse every few minutes..I had to stay online and keep retrieving
and deleting my mail, because alack, at the time my hard drive was so full
more than a few hundered mails would have filled it. I forget exactly why
it happened.. So it wasn't exactly mail, just 1 mail over and over and over.

Basically, what happened was, someone lost their mailbox, and their ISP had
a non-standard "your mail was undeliverable" subject line in the message.
(Which got past the listproc filters.....)

So, the list sends a mail. It bounces off the ISP back to the list.

The list then redistributes this to all list members, including Mr Bouncy,
who, of course, bounces it...

Every message that made it to the list added another boulder to the
avalanche......

Talk about exponential progression.......

I remember finding a lot, and spending the rest of the day deleting them as
they came up.... I didn't count them though, so I hadn't realised it was
5000+ though....

procmail (which works with PINE) works very well. I don't think I
could remain on the list without it.....

About two days, wasn't it? I know it took me about half an hour to
download my mail that first day, with my 28K8... I was not pleased :/

> I don't think we had one of them since we got rid of Listproc, have we?

I think it happened only once, before Mark could unsubscribe the offender.
