Subject: Yamatetsu Aquadome?
Date: Mon Feb 12 02:35:01 2001
I have been working my victims^H^H^H^H^H^H^H team slowly into becoming
retainer forces for Yamatetsu... in the 3e Corporate Download I finally
noticed that one of their subdivisions has a self-sustaining underwater
habitat in the Sea of Japan, in fact it won them the Draco Foundation
5million nuyen prize from the Bid D's will for the first self-sustaining
underwater community.

Since my players have not only become semi complacent (as much as I'll let
them) with their current state of residences and their existing equipment,
and they do not have much in the way of underwater knowledge, moving them on
location would be a rather nice way to shake up their confidence, maybe give
them a good reason not to carry around ACs :-) Does anyone know of novels,
resources, etc. on the Saotome Aquadome, or barring that, have any
particularly good pointers on underwater engineering and/or existing
underwater habitats?

Thanks in advance,

2 novels that come to mind immediately are 'The Abyss' (I forget the
author), and 'Sphere' by Michael Crichton. They both give detailed
descriptions of (I assume) current day underwater habitats. I'd just
modernise it all a bit, make it a bit roomier, bring it up to 2061
standards :)

Own both the books, own both the movies in collector's edition DVDs :-)
Abyss is surprisingly accurate (at certain points) given the subject matter
at hand, but I'm trying to keep away from too many allusions to it. (That,
and I have to be fairly accurate also, since one of the players has
experience with deep sea diving.)

Also consider that at the moment, the largest underwater habitat in the
world is AQUARIUS off the Florida Keys, which holds six researchers
comfortably for a maximum of a ten day stretch. Some considerable advances
I think will be in order before we can create a habitat large enough to be
self sustaining.

You got me looking around with that comment, and I found a bit of info on
Aquarius at http://www.uncwil.edu/nurc/aquarius/

Will be good for my Vladivostok campaign. The players have no idea. [evil GM

Don't know if this'll be helpful, but the novel "Shadowboxer"
(ptui!) contains some stuff about underwater habitats.

Terrible book, but this info might prove useful to you. The
author is Nicholas Pollotta (sp?)

Haha yeah, I hit there too... it has some nice visuals on the location and
bathymetric location on the sea shelf... I have yet to find a blueprint or
floor plan of the place tho, just the IRIX walkthrough.

It shouldn't be too hard to draw a floorplan from the walkthrough.

Except that the thing is boring :-) The unit is a single floor, single
walkway, bunks at one end and the wetroom at the other with the labs
inbetween. The place is comfortable, no doubt - running freshwater, shower,
a decent net connect for being deepsea... but I feel it's not quite enough
to expand properly to a full-sized aquadome with hydroponic plant capable of
sustaining the population therein, much less the rest involved in a
completely self-sustaining system. I need more cheezy sci-fi shows to work
with ;-)

*starts hunting* Lemme see what I can find - I think there was a floor plan
in the Orson Scott Card parallel novel to the movie... (not novelization,
really... too well written for that (what do you want, it's OSC))

There's not a lot at the Studio website. It'd probably be a better bet at a
fansite.

There's also Leviathan, which was a crap version of The Abyss

You know, the fact that I have the floorplan to the DEEPCORE probably
doesn't even surprise anyone anymore. What do I have to do to /impress/ you

Haha... I in fact was hoping FASA would do a 3e New Portland, since all the
players in my present group and myself live in the Portland area or around
it... *cough*WizKids?*cough*

Speaking of which... does anyone know much about WizKids' past behavior wrt
non-profit licensing? I've been wanting to do a SR MOO for the last few
years (as a vehicle for pbem or other cannot-meet-in-person SR players and
GMs, not a total SR game) but FASA wouldn't even return my emails or phone
calls to say no.

Will do. I have to scan it; I'm sure someone around here will do that for
me. [Around here in real life, that is.]

That's what you're getting. ;) DEEPCORE is the module in the Abyss.

I'll get that scanned in...tomorrow? Hopefully. If not, sometime very soon.

Those are online at several astronomy websites... although it is a somewhat
moot point, since Mir is currently enroute to a firey grave in the Pacific
ocean due to lack of funding.

NASA's website has plans for the ISS, which is far more interesting an
environment anyways. ;-)

Yeah. I know. It's big news here. We're all gonna have to duck. The
Russians are aiming to miss Australia... which is nice. I don't think they
looked at where New Zealand is, however.

It doesn't cover the Saotome Aquadomes per se, but you might want to
check out Target: Smuggler Havens. There it talks about underwater
aquacologies in general and goes into particular detail about security
measures used around and inside an aquacology.

>From what I understand, underwater aquacologies were also going to be
covered in the formerly-upcoming-now-in-limbo Target: Wastelands (which
was originally supposed to be released this summer, but in light of
FASA's closure, who knows).

I mentioned in my email, but somewhat obliquely. This was mentioned, along
with an interesting plot idea re: their competitors for the prize (Draco) in
Corporate Download under the assets of Yamatetsu, who owns Saetome.
