Umm, I hate to point out the truly obvious, but wouldn't a Shaman with an
Elemental Totem be a Hermetic Mage?!?! I mean seriously, the hermetics get
their powers through control/manipulation of the elements in the same way that
Shamans get their powers through nature. I think that your looking at the
elemental concept from the wrong viewpoint. Ya see, this may be basic, and I
don't intend it as a flame, but the Elemental viewpoint is descended from Greek
philosphy--they explained that everything was made up of 4 materials (the 4
basic elements). AmerIndian culture is descended from Eastern beliefs, and has
little/nothing to do with Socrates and Plato. They didn't believe in the
Elemental theory (actually, they would never have even heard of it!) they
believed in the spirit concept. If your fuzzy on this, reread the start of the
magic section in Shadowrun or read some basic philosophy texts... Theres a
REALLY big difference. And for that reason, the whole concept is really rather
absurd... it'd be somewhere along the lines of asking why a hermetic mage can't
summon a nature spirit or have a totem. They're two completely outlooks on
magic, so even though with basic spells they yield the same results, the
focus/force behind them is far far different...
