You got it right. Here is an example: Troll attacks mage: mage throws man
abolt and gets 2 successes Dam D if troll gets 0-1, S for 2-3, M for 4-5, L fo
r 6-7 and 0 if 8+

Actually, it seems like if the Troll got one success that knocks out one of
the mages, and therefore the damage remains S.

So this means that if I cast Hellblast and roll 2 successes, the targets have
to roll at least 4 successes or die, right? (D-1 down to D, and then S).
Nasty. And someone was trying to say mages aren't powerful...
