I haven't played it for a while, but I think the design parameters for
xtank might be a reasonable place to look for ideas.

In a nutshell, xtank is a multi-player vehicle combat game that runs under
the X Window System. Xtank is strongly reminicent of Car Wars when it was a
much simpler game.

Just a random thought...
