Alright, 1st off-- Minotaur, I'm relatively certain that a CF is a
Cubic Foot, which is generally 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches, or 30cm a
side if you'd prefer metric...
Second off, if ya wanna try and design a micro drone, why reinvent the
wheel? Try going and taking a look at your local hobby shop in the RC
department... and if ya wanna build a robot arm, look at Radio Shack, and ad in
the cost of remote control--ya should be able to do either one of these without
firearm capabilities for under $200 bucks today... now suppose you wanna add in
a microcamera with a transmitter? Just look up the costs for the
microcamcorder in SRII... Tack that on to the price, and you've got full
video/sound on a miniature dune buggy, or a boat, or plane, etc...
Now, suppose you wanna build a spider like device? Shouldn't actually
be all that much more complicated, Take a look at a toy store, and I'm sure
you'd be able to find at least one thing which walks on mechanical legs... Take
one of those, and insert a transmitter and maybe do a little bit of rewiring
with some electronics, and shazam, ya got a remote control spider with
vidcam... I'd say you could basically build one of these things to about as
small as you could practically size the camera and tranceiver to...
Of course, don't even consider trying to put a gun on either one of
these... Cuz quite frankly unless you get absolutely spectactular recoil
compensation you're gonna frag the plastic shell and electronic innards of this
thing all to hell when the gun fires, cuz I'm sorry, but the amount of recoil
from even a small gun firing is gonna pick up anything that Tyco puts out and
hurl it backwards at least several feet... And unfortunately if you tried
tacking the recoil comp onto something like this, you'd probably end up with
more mass than the drone itself has... Admittedly that sounds fine, but I don't
think it'd agree all that well with the thing's suspension...
However, I still think that this allows the possibility of turning
loose something say the size of a walkman loose to crawl through the sewers
and into the ventalation shafts of a building, giving a rigger a helluva lot
of info on a place...
Perhaps another option with drones this small (and for all practical
purposes, this inexpensive) might be to load 'em down with C12, then send 'em
in via the ventalation shafts, secure various locations and either work as a
helluva distraction or possibly take down a building--of course this sorta
loses the subtlety factor...
Ya know, something just occured to me here, namely that rigger control
gear for a vehicle is just outrageously overpriced... At least it would be for
one of these thing... then again, maybe by allowing for the possibility that
these drones have significantly less than 1 point of body as far as SR is
concerned might compensate...
Well, I've done my babbling for now... Comments and Flames welcome
