Subject: Mounting Weapons on Drones
Date: Fri, 29 Jan 93 05:22:09 CET
I agree with Jason. I can think of a number of useful weapons that could
be mounted on drones. (Most of these ideas come from that movie constantly
mentioned, _Runaway_.)

INJECTORS: Any toxin or drug could easily be placed in a hypo-injector
attached to the drone. Some good ones are stunners, sleepers, killers, etc.
Heck you could have a selectable multi-magize hypo carrying a spectrum of
nastie goodies. Be sure to include some hyper-coagulants for those enemies
with Platelet factories.

SPRAYERS: Advanced types would have a selectable nozzle and a powerful
compressor to allow fairly long-distance squirts (maybe 5-7 meters). You
can mount lots of great coctails here. Acid is the first thing that comes
to mind, but being more creative, howabout that chemical that dries into
a substance that explodes on contact? Or what about a little sodium held
in a suspension liquid? How about an instant oil-slick? Depending upon
the size of the drone the amount of payload you can mount will vary -- but
even the smallest of drones who can only carry a dozen or so ounces can
be nasty.

BOMBS: Someone mentioned this already but I'll mention it again. You could
pack enough explosive on even the smallest of drones to pack a nasty wallop.

MICRO-MISSILES: Guns might have kick but not missiles. If they have decent
warheads on them (or nasty chemical payloads, etc.) they can be quite
effective. The smallest drones might only be able to carry of few of these, but
oh what
a few!

JOLTERS: How would you like a remote-controlled TASER with enough current to
kill under the right conditions. All it would take is contact of the drone's
body with flesh.

DECOYS: Drones can make great decoys -- producing sound, IR signatures,
EM chaff, etc. Heck, a really advanced model might be able to project
holographic images. Lower-tech is stuff like a one-shot smoke cloud or
flash-packs.

But let's face it, the real advantage to drones is the cost. Basic drone
construction costs are almost nothing unless you're getting really fancy.
As far as remote-control goes, if an actual rig is too expensive then a
simple radio, wire, microwave, etc. remote system could be built rather
cheaply. If the rigger forgoes the rig, he can probably afford a veritable
army of drones and still have enough money left over for a decent rigged
vehicle.
