The interpretation of what a smartgun projects into your vision can
vary from person to person (or manufacturer to manufacturer) but there
are significant differences between smartguns and laser sights. Smartguns
project the image of the aiming dot/crosshairs/pink elephants onto the
*target in your vision* and not onto the object that you're firing at. It's
hard to be stealthy when the opposition sees your laser sight dots. They
don't see anything when you are targeting with smartguns.
A smartgun does not necessarily have to have an imaging system to
work. It could use an inertial system to detect where it is pointing.
Let's not get into a lengthy discussion on the workings of a smartgun
however, especially since the Lords on High nor their lackeys have had any
dissertations on the matter. Pretty much all that I have seen on the
matter so far seems pretty much right, but I would like to build upon it
for giggles.

Gun Cameras add a +4 to the target number for firing if the firer
cannot see the target himself. The user would not have to switch perspectives
of vision, but only have to route the picture from the camera to a Retinal
Display Link. (Kind of like the new TV's that have those "Smart Windows.")
Any recoil mods for firing while relying on a Gun Camera are doubled.
This can be compensated by either putting the camera on a vibration mount
(500Y for mount, high cost due to miniaturization [or game balance]) or
installing vibration correcting chips in your smart gun link. (250Y, .05
essence sound good?)
The rules can be expanded and detailed further by saying that some
gun cameras are better than others to use due to size. Each size of GC can
be classified as to the range that the camera will allow you to see with
good resolution. While the ranges for weapons listed are due to the
dynamics of the shell being fired (degredation of flight characteristics
over range) the range of a gun while being fired using a gun camera would
be reduced to the range of the camera since you are only as god as you can
see. Gun cameras are rated in ranges: light pistol, heavy pistol, SMG,
assault rifle, etc. If you mount a cheap little light pistol gun camera on
an assault rifle, the range categories for firing would be for a light
pistol (since you are only as good as you can see.) If you were to mount
an HMG gun camera on an assault rifle you would gain no extra range
benefits since your rounds are restricting you and not your vision.

I'll let you guys chew on that for a while. I've blown my wad of
ideas for the day. :)
