Subject: Depleted Uranium is NOT dangerously radioactive
Date: Tue, 6 Apr 93 01:36:32 CET
Umm, the discussion concerning Depleted Uranium rounds is all well and good
except that I believe someone said something to the effect of:
"Since the US almost nuked the USSR in 2012 there would have been
a tight control on Depleted Uranium"

Now, I agree that there would be a tight control on uranium, but I
believe the above statement is a non-sequiter (sp?). Depleted Uranium is
just that: depleted. It is not dangerously radioactive and cannot be used
to make a nuclear wepaon any more than the engine block of a Westwind can.
The reason they are so effective isn't because of any radiation: it's because
they are so dense, amongst the densest materials known.

I just wanted to clarify that. however, DU would be controlled because
of other reasons. For instance, it's probably already used in the manufacture
of APDS rounds; it has a potent mass even when reduced to a thin sliver, making
it ideal for penetrating armor. That's why it's used by tank guns to knock
out other tanks.

But the attack from Shiloh had nothing to do with it.
