Okay, here's the REAL reason for LSD/DMSO, as a couple people have guessed:

Once you hit them with it, they are going to be effectively out of it for
quite some time (depending on the acid's strength, I would imagine). The
LAST thing they are going to be thinking about is fighting or shooting. Trying
to figure out why the walls are breathing, probably. Fighting? No.
