Shadowtech, page 94 (Ruthenium Polymers)

"The existence of chemicals that change colors under mutable physical
conditions has been known for some time. Many have, in fact, been used in
modern industrial chemistry as indicators, chemical "clocks," and the basis
for optical chip technology...
"Optical displays utilizing ruthenium polymers long ago replaced the
outdated liquid-crystal and gas-plasma screen units and have been a key factor
in increasing the portability of computing power."
I don't know how much bearing this has on the discussion, except that it
sounds like the sourcebook reference which someone mentioned. From what little
I know about computer technology, it seems to make sense. Presto, computers
in the 2050's have far surpassed binary limitations.
