Subject: Draconian culture
Date: Wed, 5 May 1993 16:51:39 EDT
I've been toying with the idea of developing a sort of guide to the culture
shared among dragons. I'm posting some of my thoughts on this subject so
that we can toss it around for a while, feel free to comment.

NOTE: these are just thoughts not a definite set of rules, just a few concepts
That I'll probably develop into something more focused later. Input is most
welcome.

Names: All dragons have names. Greater Dragons have two names, one which is
known only among Dragons (an which no self respecting dragon would ever reveal)
in the language of Dragons. These secret names are the Dragon's "true" names,
and cannot be fully translated into english. The true names reflect some
prevailing aspect of the Dragon's chatacter, for instance, Tirnador's true name
might translate into somthing resembling "Trickster", Dunklezahn's might transl
ate into something like "King or Lord". Needless to say these names probably
have double or triple meanings in the draconian toungue.

The second name of a Greater Dragon is the name by which he/she is commonly
referred to ie "Tirandor" or "Dunklezahn" or "Ryumo" etc...
In the case of lesser Dragons, their true and common names are the same.

While dragons do deal with common worldly things, their true purposes, motives
and goals are mysterious, known only to dragons. Most dragons really don't
care about the more mundane undertakings of others of thier kind. The real
activities of Dragons are very abstract and far reaching, possibly taking
centuries. Thus a Dragon taking over a major corporation will be of little
consequence to other dragons.

Every few centuries or so, or when some important event occurs, all of the
greater dragons will meet in some secluded location for a conclave. There
they discuss each other's actions openly in thier own language, using their
true names. The conclave may come to a decision that will hold no matter
what. Rulings of the conclave are never broken for any reason. To do so
could have drastic consequences for the offender, since ANY decision made
by the conclave will come to pass. The conclave's combined power can grant
or take away some of a dragon's special powers. An example would be like
such.

At the last conclave (in the previous awakened age) Tirandor was accused
of serious offenses against the draconian community. As such, the conclave
decreed that he should lose his ability to alter his shape.

An explanation for this would be that the conclave has some similarity to a
meeting of a magical group, and so the whole can alter the connections to the
astral plane had by individuals.

With some more input into this, I may perhaps try to develop a Draconian
sourcebook, with some history and insight into the dealings of Dragons.
Interesting topics would be Mating Habits, Magical rituals, and general
Protocols between the greater Dragons. The way I see it, lesser dragons
have relatively little power, while the Greater Dragons are the aristocracy
and nobility, possessing great power over their fellows. Another interesting
topic would be ascencion, how does a dragon become "Greater" is it a matter
of age, genetics, or some type of promotion? What happens when a grater
dragon dies? Is he/she replaced or is a lesser dragon of distinction
promoted to his position? These are all questions I'd like to answer.
