I would agree with Christina that shapeshifters are not recommended as
PCs, unless you truly live in Munchkinland. Our campaign, however, does have an
interesting character.
She's a wolf shaman. As the only shaman in the group, I (the GM) threw
her a bone. She's infected with lycanthropy, but can control it. She is able to
use the abilities of the shapeshifter (into a wolf only) once per month, and
only within one week of the full moon, and only from dusk til dawn. It works
well.
Not a novel concept, but an effective one for our campaign.
