} the mage's *personal* aura, not the aura of anything he's carrying as they

This is clearly false for foci (see GrimII). I have always understood
that the same applied to quickenings. If you can mask foci and not
quickenings, it would sure reduce the usefulness of quickenings relative to
spell locks. Sure, quickenings defend better than locks, but you
can't attack what you can't see.
