Truganini was a person, not a mythological term. She was the very
last native Aboriginal to the state of Tasmania (that little blot below
Victoria on maps). Sometime during colonization, the entire race of
Tassie Aboriginals were wiped out in one swoop -- a very large team of
white settlers lined up along the northern edge of Tasmania, and proceeded
south, killing everything with black skin; one of the worst cases of
genocide this country has ever seen. Truganini, a female elder of the
tribe, was the last to survive. I assume that her demise came with this
inhumane purge, but now her body (I think) has been stuffed and mounted in
a museum. Pretty horrid.
