Croddfire's right, you can't distinguish between dirty and clean tech when
it comes to Dead Zones. It's hard to quantify the criteria for a drawing
line, but it seems something like this: Any technology that does not
REQUIRE extensive processing or manufacturing will function. The limit is
roughly 19th century. A steam engine can be built without heavy
processing: get a container filled with water, a fire, and put
together by hand a few accesories, and you have it. Now, before you
argue that since bioware requires extensive manufacturing, recall again
that bioware is organic; it can be argued that evolution would have
developed something akin to the adrenal pump, reflex recorder, etc.

While we're talking about clean tech, how about MHD turbines as opposed
to nuclear/breeder reactors. They don't have any toxic waste--just
water.
