This is something Carter and I have been thinking about for a while.
I'm not going to post all modifications, because we're still
hashing them out, but I want to post the basic idea behind the
biggest modification, just to start some comments.

Basically, it's allways bothered me that a magic user gains so
many powers upon becoming an initiate. I know of only one
magic type who hasn't spent their first 12-21 points of karma
getting initiated to get all those metamagic powers. And, I've
also never seen a player go above Init Grade 3, because you get
less benefits at higher costs the more you keep raising. Besides,
I at least think mages are a bit too powerful anyway, so....

Our initial proposal is this:
First, to redefine some terms: all magic users (i.e. anyone who
buys magic capability in character creation) start life as
Grade 0 Initiates. But they have no metamagic powers.

Second, every time they spend the karma to raise a grade, they
get to choose ONE metamagic power to learn.

And that's the big modification. In my opinion, at least, it
evens out the progression of a mages growth in power, instead
of having that quick huge jump.
