Roberson:

You are right about WIndows. But I must confess that I also believe
that the Matrix, as depicted in SR is unfeasible. But my reasons go
deeper than the allocation of resources. Windows is popular with
companies because if you have learned one software package others are
a breeze to learn. This is one of the blocks that windows is built
on: Compatibility with the end user. Windows also allows programmers
to develop a multi-platform application without having to worry about
device drivers. The drivers are integrated into Windows so that by
telling Windows to draw a window, windows itself takes care of
sendiong the correct series of stuff to the video card. But for
out-in-out power programming you can't beat a simple command line. The
same is true with the Matrix. Deckers are still the dreams of
cyberpunk individuals who want to open an alternate reality and have
an illegal time doing it. What would be faster? A full construct with
complex graphics or a simple command line that can issue commands by
thought?

I in no way am saying that the Matrix could not exist. I am merely
stating that the Matrix, as they have it presented, would be a severe
waste of resources.

Virtual Reality interfaces ARE useful, but not in such a context for
an illegal computer hacker. But that is just my opinion.
