I guess you could see me as a sort of malicious psychologist (my players do).
I try to find out, from the way they play their characters, what threatens them
most, what drives them, what hurts them, what surprises them, what makes tham
laugh. Each character has ideas that they want to try out - often things that
they could never do in real life. (Like this is news for you guys.) But, the
point is that each player chooses a character type, method, and persona based
on this, and so I pretty much let my people try out anything they can justify.
I mean that these people put enough background into an idea that I can see if
actuall begin to take life, on its own. That's when I agree. I never say "no"
until I have heard how much the person has thought it out. I haven't had to
deal with any munchkins yet. (YET.)

Though I suppose that this is no new idea, I try to help my people deal with
the "real" world through the game, and I like to think that gaming teaches
skills necessary for successful interaction with others, and that the process
helps them to know themselves and others.

(Besides. . . . it's FUN!!!!)
