ML> .50 cal = 12.7mm ;-)

You're all forgetting the *length* of the complete round, people. Bullets
made for handguns typically have a 2:1 length:diameter ratio, with casings
approximately 3 times length of the projectile. In other words, a 9mm
cartridge is approximately 36mm long. Rifle bullets have a 3:1 ratio for
the projectile, with casings approximately 3 times the length of the
projectile and twice the diameter. In other words, a 5.56mm rifle round is
approximately 45mm long and has a casing diameter of approximately 11mm.

Here's some ASCII graphics to show the difference (not to scale). You can
see that rifle ammunition has a significantly larger projectile, and a much
longer and wider casing (and thus more powder).

Handgun: Rifle:
____ _ ________
|____|_) | \______
| _|____>
|________ /

Note that SMGs use handgun-caliber ammunition.

Now, caseless ammunition takes up less volume than brass casings, but the
same principles apply.

Now, do you see why you can't chamber a handgun for rifle-caliber
ammunition? They're just too wide and long to fit in a handgun.
