Yeah, it's stated repeatedly that nobody can astrally project into earth orbit,
and those few magicians who take the semi-ballistics go mad if they try any
magic which goes outside the ship.

Hmm... This sounds like the idea of the void elemental (from NAGEE??). But that
doesn't explain why people casting spells into space go mad.
