Y'all know my position on this, but last night I went and asked a 3rd degree
Priestess of Ares (SR equivelant? Grade LOTS!) about it.
Suprise! I was wrong. A mage cannot use Earth Energy (mana) in space. Nothing
happens to the mage; there's just nothing to see, and no energy to use.
Of course, he can still assense
1 his own aura
2 anyone else's aura
AND an established biosphere in space, i.e. a space station or lunar colony,
COULD develop a mana field very quickly (say, a couple of years, depending
on how hard the mages work to nurture one).

This is, of course, real magick. While SR magick is based on the real thing,
there are discrepancies. Take this as you will.
