Great idea but a couple of suggestions to change it.

You could assign certain items more value than others, ie the ring of your
grandmother that you really loved and has just died should be worth alot. Or
if they wanted to collect stuff which didn't mean much to them emotionally
then let them try and enchant stuff instead.

Otherwise I think the idea is great.
