I believe that decking is one of the things that makes Shadowrun a
unique game... In my games I try to make the decking as interactive as
possible - making it so that the other characters (the decker is nearly
always a PC) are interested in what's happening in the Matrix...
At the very least, this means that the decker links a screen or a few
hitcher jacks to his deck, but, I have found that runs where the decker
has to get something from a cold store system, which means penetration,
can lead to a very interesting scenario where the decking is going on as
the other members of the team are fighting off security...
Of course, there's also the default scenario of when the decker is running
Matrix cover for a penetration - hacking the corp's mainframe from outside,
and disarming alarms, maglocks, security cameras, etc.

If, however, there is no immediate interest for the other characters, I'll
fix it so that they can watch the run through hitcher jacks, or an external
display, and I try to make the decking sequence as interesting as possible,
describing the systems in detail, and playing things out to their fullest...

Brian Allison wrote about Matrix simulation software... Sounds really
interesting... What language is it in, and for what platform?

I came across a reference to a game called 'DataRace' being developed at
present by SigGraph, on the WorldWideWeb -

[ Here's a quick rundown of what's in the page for those without Mosaic ]

SigGraph's networked three dimensional cyberpunk game

Work on DataRace (as it is currently called) has just begun. Thrown into a
virtual network in first person, players compete for resources as they travel
through an abstract three dimensional visualization.

Development has commenced on PC's in a mix of C and assembler.

Here's a rough sketch of what screens could look like. Visible are different
nodes on the network and the connections being made between them.

[ The picture shows a series of cubes, spehres and pyramids in 3-D space -
It's VERY reminiscent of the description of the Matrix in Shadowrun ]

I was thinking that one could cobble together a Matrix simulation using
Mosaic and HTML documents...

As a matter os interest, how many people on the list have Mosaic, and, if so,
do they, like me set their lists to NOMAIL, and read the postings using
Mosaic to link to Mark Imbriaco's Shadowrun WWW Server or direct via gopher to
Listserv archives to read the lists?
