I'm sitting here in Australia shaking my head. Are things really that
bad in America? You seem to all take it in stride that getting a weapon
or taking self-defense courses is a pretty natural thing to do if you
live in a city.

Or is it just this particular city that is unusually dangerous? Or are
people over-reacting? (I expected to read someone suggesting `Don't
worry about it - just keep away from area (x) after sunset' - but no one
suggested that.)

I'm trying to get a better feel for American society (and how far it is
along the path to the society that the Shadowrun system supposes).
