Plus, as any good martial artist (is that the right term?) can tell you,
you need years of practice before you can defend yourself reasonably. A
five-week course will give you confidence in yourself, but not the skills
needed to take down an armed (or even unarmed) attacker.
As an added point, IMHO, MA classes don't put enough emphasis on practical
application. I've studied under 3 or 4 different teachers/styles and none of
them put any real emphasis on actual fighting. Learning the moves, yes.
Limited "sparring", and by that I mean practicing one or two moves on an
attack when you know where and when the attack is coming. But no real training
on how to fight. Is this just a run of bad luck on my part, or is this normal.
And is the Fearless Leader going to melt my face for straying off the
topic this far?
