No it's not!
the file://localhost/ designation implies that the page
is in the same machine as you're accessing it from. Which
is fine if you're actually on USL.EDU, but not if you're
using a different machine, I'm afraid.
If USL.EDU is the machine it's on, then the address for that
page _should_ be
http://usl.edu/h2/jpj8816/.html/jpj8816.html
However, I've just checked up on it, using Mosaic, and,
unfortunately it's just told me that
Requested document
(URL http://usl.edu/h2/jpj8816/.html/jpj8816.html) could not be
accessed.
The information server either is not accessible or is refusing
to serve the document to you.
which, I'm sure you'll agree
is a bit of a bummer.
There are two possible causes for this:
1) You're 'puter only has a WWW client, and not a server. (You
need to have a server to allow people from outside your own
system access www pages in it.)
2) The other possibility is that I've gotten your machine's name
wrong, and that the system you're on is really a network, and
the email address jpj8816@***.edu means that the mail is sent
on to your account on, say jpj8816@********.usl.edu.
For example, people on this netwrok here (lancs.ac.uk) who have
their names aliased - i.e. you could send mail to
dodger@*****.lancs.ac.uk and I would get it, even though my
username is actually csc086 - can have mail sent to them
@*****.ac.uk Thus, you'd be able to send mail to me as
dodger@*****.ac.uk, and the main computer here would know that
it was meant to go to csc086@*****.lancs.ac.uk.
How_ever_! Trying to access a home page "@*****.ac.uk" would fail,
because lancs.ac.uk is a _network_ rather than a computer, with
over 100 different computerslinked to it, each with their own
specific IP address, ranging from panther.lancs.ac.uk which is
the address of the Xterminal I'm using at the moment, to
cent1.lancs.ac.uk, which is the main computer here, to
ega007000005.lancs.ac.uk which is a PC down in the Management lab,
where I do my Ops. Man. stuff.
Does that make sense?
In any case, check out with your sysop or someone about your
home page's address.
Jackin' out...
