We tend to cover up any air holes in cups, - foils are thin :)
With Shlaeger fencing, I have been wearing the jacket and some padding and still
have gotten the skin broken. Think of it like some one hitting you very hard
with a butter knife (edge only) if they hit hard enough on a bone, the skin
might break.
Fencing though is fun, and there are almost never serious injuries
Fact: Hiedelberg University in Germany is known for their saber fencing without
facemasks. They would only wear eye protection. It was considered a mark of
distinction if you garduated from there and only had 2-3 facial wounds.
