Former U.S. President Richard Nixon passed away this evening from
complications resulting from a major stroke he suffered earlier this
week.

Dispite being a fairly staunch liberal, I personally have a tremendous
amount of respect for Nixon. If you set aside Watergate (which I
personally believe was blown out of proportion, and really wasn't any
worse than any other president, before or after Nixon, had done, he was
jsut unlucky enough to get caught), Nixon was one of the greatest
peacemakers of the latter 20th century, and as recently as last month was
still the peacemaker, visiting Russia in the wake of their first free
elections.

It is a shame that history will only remember Nixon for Watergate, and as
the first (and so far only) U.S. president to ever resign the office,
because it overshadows the many other things he and his administration in
the light of the cold-war of the early seventies, and his post-presidency
activities.

Nixon was 81.
