First, I didn't "invent" it. It's already in the rules. See the
description of the Athletics skill in the skill list, and the section on
"Hauling the Load" for more details.
Second, your strength is by far the largest contribution to how
much you can lift, so the gymnast won't be able to lift as much with a
strength of 4 as a weigthlifter with a strength of 6. Even with a
strewngth of 5 (most of the gymnasts I know are pretty damn strong) you
still have to make up at least 20 kilos to cover the difference in
strength alone. That would require a skill of 20+ !!! That's unlikely.
Third, if you look at how much someone with a strength of 6 can
lift (maximum) it's pretty damn impressive. at least 120 kilos! That's
not counting the extra 6D6 they get for maximum lift or any successes
they might get on an Athletic/Lifting skill roll. Someone with a
"paltry" skill of six and a decent athletics skill can lift in excess of
500 pounds! I will grant that some people are extreme cases, but even a
strength of 7 gives them a HUGE advantage over someone with a strength
of 6. Mr. Universe may be gigantico huge and have a strength of 7, but
anything above that is just losing the scale of the game.
I can offer you your own advice. Don't invent a new mechanic.
Racial maximum of 6 is there for a reason and it's silly to play around
with the averages. It's not even necessary. Remember that skills are
there to represent training, hard work, and experience. You don't NEED
to jack around the stats to get the desired result.
