It runs into a couple of problems when you begin defaulting to other skills
or attributes though. I think the opposed success test with both sides
looking for a TN of 4 (modified by various effects) is a better solution.
As an example, say we have Paul, the unstealthy, but very quick magician,
who has a Quickness of 10 but no Stealth skill. Say he's trying to sneak past
Mr Bozo the grumpy guard, who has an Intelligence of 3. Paul rolls his 10
Quickness dice against a TN of 8 (base 4 +4 for defaulting), and Bozo rolls
his 3 dice against a TN of 4. This is assuming no modifiers for other
effects such as wounds or visibility. You see the difference between this
and an opposed success test using each others Skill/Attribute as the TN? [If
we were to use your suggested method, then Paul would be needing 7's, and
Bozo 10's].
