While cleaning out some papers that had been lying around in my room for at
least a year, I found safety sheets for methanol and ethanol; because we had
this alcohol allergy discussion a few days back, I thought I'd post some of
the effects they cause here...

METHANOL (CH3OH)
Maximum Allowable Concentration (MAC): 200 parts per million (ppm) / 260 mg/m3
Direct consequences: The substance irritates the eyes, skin, and respiratory
system. The fluid degreases the skin. In large quantities the substance can
cause loss of conciousness and reduced vision. In very large quantities
there is a chance of unconciousness and death.

FIRE: highly flammable / extinguishing: powder, alcoholresistant foam, very
large amounts of water, halon, carbondioxide
EXPLOSION: vapor explosive in air / in case of fire: keep tanks/vats cool
with water
INHALATION: coughing, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, unconciousness /
first aid: fresh air, rest, call doctor
SKIN: is absorbed, turns red / first aid: remove contaminated clothing,
rinse skin with large amounts of water, call doctor if necessary
EYES: turn red, reduced sight / first aid: rinse with large amounts of
water, then call doctor
INGESTION: coughing, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, headaches, drowsiness /
first aid: transport to hospital immediately

Note: MAC value is reached before the substance is smelled.

ETHANOL (C2H5OH)
MAC: 1000 ppm / 1900 mg/m3
Direct consequences: The substance irritates the eyes, skin, and
respiratory system. The fluid degreases the skin. The substance can, in high
concentrations or after ingestion, cause excitement or loss of conciousness.
Consequences of prolonged, repeated exposure: liver damage after oral ingestion.

FIRE: highly flammable / extinguishing: powder, alcoholresistant foam, very
large amounts of water, halon, carbondioxide
EXPLOSION: vapor explosive in air / in case of fire: keep tanks/vats cool
with water
INHALATION: coughing, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness / first aid: fresh
air, rest, call doctor if necessary
SKIN: turns red / first aid: remove contaminated clothing, rinse skin with
large amounts of water
EYES: turn red, pain / first aid: rinse with large amounts of water, then
call doctor if necessary
INGESTION: headaches, dizziness, drowsiness / first aid: rinse mouth, call
doctor if necessary

The above, of course, is only the normal reaction. People with allergies
would suffer a lot more...
