Care to give a page reference? Essence is defined as "a measure of the
soundness of the central nervous system and spirit... When Essence
declines, Magic declines by the same amount."

Later on: "Characters can _never_ have an Essence less than 0. If they do,
they die."

Nowhere does it state a connection between Essence (low or otherwise) and
sanity.

Perhaps you're thinking of CP2020?
