Subject:	Trolls/Dermal Armor

I'm new to the list and hope that this question doesn't bring up an old,
terrible debate but a friend of mine created a Troll Samurai and wanted to
add dermal plating lvl 2. He asked if this would give him a total dermal
lvl of 3 or not.
In the last campaign the GM would have said "no", because you're taking out
natural dermal armor (lvl 1) and replacing it with lvl 2 plating, for a total
of 2. I told my friend this but then he quoted SR2, page 248, "Dermal plating:
This is an invasive protection system that uses hard plastic and metal fiber
plates BONDED (my caps lock) to the user's skin to produce dermal armor."

If dermal plating is added on (or bonded or whatever), then doesn't it add to
any previous dermal plating? If so then a troll who had dermal plating lvl 2
added on would have a total dermal plating lvl of 3, yes?
