Subject: Reluctant Tidings
Hayden:
'Tis indeed with a passing weighty heart that I proffer tidings
of my intended tenuring of resignation from the post of Assistant
Fearless Leader, also known as Dread Executor, to become effective in
what I perceive to be the customary two week's time.
Likely the receipt of this news is met with chagrin and puzzlement.
I do not depart for reasons of ennui -- neither my zeal for ShadowRun or
this list's discussion have waned; embark driven by causes of perceived
burden of duties -- verily, there are poor occasions, but I would not
relinquish this post unless the trials and tribulations grew many-fold
worse; for considerations of personality conflict -- your and I, despite
our dramatically diametric views, have e'er maintained a cordial entente'.
The /sole/ motivation
Quite the contrary, do understand the sole motivation driving this
act is purely practical, /id est/ the pending cessation of my Internet
access to terminate simultaneous with the close of my academic career at
Texas A & M ('twould be most inappropriate for your executive administrator
to be without requisite means for the carrying out of his duties, nicht
wahr?); consequently, I am uncertain as to the length of the duration of my
divorce from the communicative intercourse of the network, and I cite this
temporal durational indeterminacy as the chief contributor to the rationale
for my stepping down.
If I was confident of a timely resumption of connection this letter
would merely mention a lengthy hiatus -- forsooth, as I hope it shall be (and
if the procession of events grants life to this wish, I would supplicate for
some retention of amiability on your part to the possibility that I might
resume my office).
Hayden, I say with all honesty that it has been a pleasure and an
honor to serve both you and the members of Our Fair List in such capacity
for such a time. I begrudge the necessity, and I egress not lacking a hint
of sorrow and regret. But leave I do, and for parts unknown, perhaps to
return, perhaps not. The much-honored Dark Elf ne'er was able to return
to us, and if this earlier referent holds true for me, I would hope that
the individuals of this list shall occasionally lend a thought or two to
my memory, thereby demonstrating that my span here will not have passed
unheeded and unhonored. Though blind arrogance pricks me on, I feel
confident in declaring that, for better or worse,
"You shall ne'er see our like again."
Very sincerely yours,
Doctor Doom

"... Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off and sitting well in order smite
The surrounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars until I die."
-- Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "Ulysses"
P.S. Should you desire to do so, you may forward this to the list;
I considered announcing my intent to the general, but I felt
you deserved to be informed of it first.
