It's a fictional, arbitrary unit that was never defined by FASA.
A number of collated guesses on the exact size of the Megapulse can be found
from Aaron Wigley's Web page, at

I won't quote the whole article here, for size reasons.. It's got a number
of guesses putting the size of a Pulse at 16 bits, 24 bits, 64 bits, 1024
bits, etc., finally ending with a "Who cares?" post that happens to be the
one I agree with. I'd suggest you check out the article, it's very
interesting and one of the better things on Aaron's rather extensive Web
site.
