The truth is, Apple did no such thing. Yes, Bill Atkinson, the guy
behind System 32, convinced a bunch of the PARC guys to jump ship, but
Apple never paid any money to Xerox for it. Why do you think that within
days of Apple filing their look-and-feel suit against Microsoft, Xerox
filed an identical suit against Apple?

And Bill Atkinson, whom I already mentioned, saw a PARC OS demo on a
Star one day and said, "windows! fantastic". And he took the idea and
improved it (he pioneered the concept of the "virtual desktop") -- PARC
couldn't do overlapping windows, for instance -- hired off a bunch of
the PARC programming team, and the result was the QuickDraw and the OS
running on the Apple Lisa. Which Steve Jobs swiped for the Macintosh
when the Lisa project was canned.
