A historian studies what happened, with occasional interest in the why,
although historians tend to come up with some pretty grand theories on
their own. Sociologists study what's happening, with the primary interest
being the why rather than the what. A historical sociologist studies what
happened with the primary interest being the why. The tense and the what/
why dichotomy are the primary differences, IMNSVHO.
