I would agree whole heartedly, when I GM a large scale battle, most of the
outcome (read- most not all) is pre-decided. There is always room for
exceptions for character ingenuity.
I worry little about mechanics and dice, and more about the feeling of the
combat. "About this time the wall crumbles under the pressure of the attackers"
