From what I understand, outside of the Metaplanes, you need life
to have a viable astral space. Ie, only a planet with life would have an
astral a mage won't go brain-dead seeing.

Not really. His magic as is would still work, unless the planet
had recently had horrors...[explain below]

Horrors are creatures from the Metaplanes. As the Earth's
magical energy increases, they can come over(near its peak). Think of
Cthulhu, and you won't be far off on some of them, including Verjigorm, a
MONSTER HORROR. Horrors pollute astral space with a horrible background
count. If they were recently on the planet(As in above), ie, within
500-?(Doesn't say how long it takes to clear Astral space of pollution),
then the mage, when casting spells, would take a TON of damage from the
pollutants. Hm...On the order of around maybe 18D+2(2 wound levels past
Deadly)...or maybe even +4 or +5...VERY BAD THINGS...;)
