i personally see blood magic not so much as a source of energy (after
all, the earth is just loaded with energy, so sucking it from someone
else is not a necessity when there are billions of trees who can
readily spare you a few drops of theirs without really noticing it)
but as a psychological matter. the problem with casting magic in the
awakened world generally isn't one of getting enough energy, but
rather one of not getting too much.

blood magic is, at least in part, a holdover from the pre-awakened
world, where mana was too sparsely available for most mages to tap
directly, so they did have to find other sources; blood magic was one
such source.

I could tell by his slurred speech, the heavy glaze over his eyes,
and his inability to stand straight that he was under the influence
of a powerful narcotic. That, or he was a graduate student.
