Okay heres my shot in the dark. In earthdawn there is only a
single astral, the problem is that is corrupted by the presence of
the horrors. In order to cast spells in ED the character creates an
astral filter, almost everything (save horrors) have to use these
filters or matrixs to draw on pure astral energy, I assume that this
includes spirits. Now assuming that Gia, mother-earth etc is really a
hugh spirit, it make (a little bit) of sence that she/he/it could
have woven a hugh matrix around the planet, to allow for 'pure
energy' to enter. The problem though with any filter is that the more
efficent it is at keeping something out the thinner the amount of
the substance that is comming through. eg take a coffee filter, the
more coffee beans(ground) (corruption) you put in the slower the
amount of coffee per time unit is made. If so it is possible that
matrix becomes so clogged that eventually there is no flow (of mana).
So what periodically happens is that Gia has to drop the matrix and
re-weave it. Similar to when you remove the coffee filter, there is
an increase in the flow of coffee. Now supposing that Gia is in the
proccess of dropping the matrix (what is a 1000 years to a planet),
it makes sence that there should be an increase in the mana as the
last dregs leave the filter. What the barrier could be, it the limit
of the matrix, this of course could mean that several of the older
dragons (and possibly some *very* powerful elven mages) could cast
spells in space as they where alive in the fourth age (ED) and still
alive in the sixth (SR), and hence have the knowledge of the
contrucion of the matrixs (micro versions of Gias').

An idea to while away the time
