I very much agree to your feelings about that. When I tries to recall
those films and books I've read which were worth the trouble, some good
character(s) always died or worse.
It seems funny, but if a hardwon victory have not any real costs of blood
and anguish, I feel cheated. Everything has a price, and one just do not
battle hardcore bad guys without loosing at least some good (wo)men.
