This is exactly what I was about to point out. While a specific
gaming group may have ideas as to their characters' beleifs, there are no
hard and fast rules saying "these entities are gods," only "these entities
have powers beyond what normal (meta)humans can perform."
And please, folks, let's not turn this into a flamewar. We're an
international community here, and people have LOTS of different ideas
regarding religion -- and most of those ideas are unreconcilable.
