Why?

The nervous system carries electrical signals; it's nothing more than a
carrier. So why should the material (immuno-rejection notwithstanding)
matter one whit? Regardless, elemental gold has two very strong factors
behind using it for such interfaces. One, it's hypo-alergenic; it's not
going to be rejected by the immune system. Two, it's the best high-
temperature conductor there is, and unless physical laws decide to
change it will remain the conductor of choice for quite some time.

BTW, according to Shadowtech (I think), gold is the primary material
used in cybernetic interfaces. Nannites go where they're supposed to,
die, and deposit tiny amounts of gold. Enough nannnites doing this and
they forge the connection between wire and nerve.
