I was wondering about the significance of that bit, especially since my
players had never been to Chicago before I locked them up in there... (and
that was _after_ HB)

Don't count on it... It seems to me many players have a tendency to miss
less-than-totally-obvious clues :) It would be nice to do, though, if you
could get it to work...
