This brings a question to mind. Just what do people do when their magicians
get initiated? What role-playing aspects do people introduce to
initiation? I ask this because I know that I do not do anything particular
for initiation. No, really - I do little more than, "well, the group gets
together for the regular full moon meeting, and second on the agenda is your
initiation. Congrats, you're now a third ranked archbishop of the floppy
eared platypus worshipping society." (Except that most of the initiatory
groups I've come across tend to be a tad more serious.)
This is not to say that the associated ordeal (if one is done), does not
require rather a tad of role-playing of course. Particularily if it is a
longish one that requires the presence of the rest of the initiatory group
while it is occuring. And it also not to say that by being a member of the
group, all the character gets is cheap initiation. Magical groups can be a
great role-playing device, and an even better plot device. Particularily
the more secretive, sinister ones. (And particularily if the player happens
to be a member of such a group that just happens to be looking into blood
magic research...oh the fun.) But on the actual initiation itself, I can
see little (besides unusual group quirks, "now that you've been initiated,
you must perform the ritual devil rat blood gargle") that there is to
actually role-play.
A few people here mentioned that they, to some degree, role-play the
initiation ceremony out, and I was just wondering if they wouldn't mind
sharing their ideas about just what they do with the rest of us.
